To make a karaoke machine affordable, designers will first substitute less expensive for more expensive (usually more sensitive) audio materials. For example, the machine might incorporate:
• plastic instead of metal,
• cheaper instead of more expensive metal,
• an RCA instead of an XLR connector,
• less instead of more wattage,
• a more durable instead of a more sensitive microphone.
Next, designers may designate a component to be built-in and to perform a dual function. While built-ins and dual function components make a machine more compact, easier to use, and more portable, such components have the disadvantage of being unavailable for tweaking by substituting an upgraded component. Built-in and dual function components often include:
• pre-amplifier and amplifier
• amplifier and speaker
• mixer and amplifier
• amplifier with digital effects processor
Thirdly, a component of the karaoke machine may be omitted, so that an additional audio component or accessory (possibly one you already own) is required to make full use of the karaoke machine. For example, the machine may include:
• passive (without power built in) instead of powered speakers, or no speakers,
• all-in-one components (for audio) without a monitor for lyrics display, or

You won’t need extensive knowledge to notice material substitutions, dual-duty components, and omitted components in a karaoke machine.
When you notice the trade-offs, remember the equation:
Cheaper materials + dual-function (or omitted) components = savings to finance more features
This quality versus affordability trade-off promotes a satisfying karaoke experience for a consumer.
There is one main disadvantage to this trade-off: When audio components perform dual purposes, substitutions of better quality components to tweak the audio quality for those components will generally not be available.
The easiest karaoke machines to tweak will be those with omitted components.

• Check for input and output jacks.
• Check for recommendations for adding audio components.
• Increase flexibility with adapters (such as RCA to XLR or vice versa).
• Know what is built-in and what can be changed.
