When it is time to purchase something most people make quick decisions and get whatever they see first off the net or in a store or they go for the cheapest price or the largest size like when purchasing a TV (big screen image but fuzzy picture).

I take the opposite way and research a product to find the absolute best product I can because I want something that’s going to work well and last me for a long time.

In so doing, I get a great item and save lots of money over the long haul by not having to purchase a replacement as often because I spend a little more to get a high quality product the first time.

Here is a story about a friend to get my point across. He likes to purchase things and is always on the lookout for what he thinks is a deal whether it is from Ebay or a local store.

It seems like he is always buying something and I can predict what will happen soon after he gets something. He will invariably either return it as it doesn’t work like he thought it would (lack of any research) or he’ll have to replace it sooner than he wanted because it broke (buying the least expensive item).

Now, if you like going through the repetitive cycle of getting new stuff all the time then I guess that is fine but I would prefer to spend my precious time doing other things and not having to always be looking for a new toaster or microwave.

Here is an example of how I go about buying something for myself. Let’s say I’m interested in a convection toaster oven for my kitchen and want a brand that will last me for years.

I would first go to Amazon.com and read reviews from anybody that had already bought toaster ovens recently and find the highest rated brands and models.

I would then try and get a general feel for the item from thereviews keeping in mind that some of the highest and lowest rated reviews will most likely be what I call “outliers“. I look for what the majority of buyers write about the product and then check for any additional reviews from other sources that reinforce them.

After I have decided that model ”X” is the highest I lthen ook at the cost to see if it is reasonable. If it is I will get it knowing I have made a good decision especially if there are any other competing brands for the same cost that are rated lower (which is usually the case).

Key Thought: Just because it is a brand name doesn’t always mean it is a good product. Quality can vary greatly even within lines from the same manufacturer!

Another way to look at it is like this; you can purchase a toaster oven for under a hundred bucks that will most likely work great for a year or two and then break so you have to buy a new one like my friend or you can spend 250 bucks once and get an oven like the Breville toaster oven that will last for years.

If you invest a little time upfront before you buy something like a convection toaster oven you can avoid the foolish cycle my friend goes through by acquiring the best itm for your needs at the most reasonable cost and not be aggravated when all of your stuff constantly breaks.
