When black and white television was introduced to the public, people marveled at the new technology. These old sets had small screens located within a large cabinet. Plasma TV uses an entire new technology. In the interior of the monitor, there are thousands of lighted cells known as pixels. These pixels are filled with xenon, neon and helium gasses and coated in phosphor atoms. The red, blue and green colors of these pixels merge to produce all the newly available colors with the plasma television sets.
The pixels are positioned between two plates of glass. When the electrical current is turned on, free radicals are released into the cells and become ions. These ions bind with one another to form plasma. The gases emit an ultraviolet light which light up each pixel. This creates the image on the plasma screen.
Besides their improved picture quality, the advantage of plasma television sets is that the thin monitors can fit nicely on a table, counter or be mounted on a wall. The plasma sets produce high quality colors and allow for better contrast ratio between dark and light colors, thereby giving off clearer and more powerful pictures.
Although consumers love their new plasma television sets, they have remained concerned over the high consumption of energy required to run them. They are expensive to use at a time when consumers are looking for energy efficiency instead of energy waste. These problems may be a thing of the past as a new generation of plasma television sets are in the process of being introduced.
The 2008 Consumer Electronics Show launched a new plasma display capable of greater energy efficiency. Through improved design, these new sets use only half as much energy as the current sets. This will amount to considerable energy savings. The new generation of plasma television sets is thinner, provides even better quality viewing and will be offered in a wireless version for easy installation.
The new plasma televisions have met with tremendous consumer approval. Increased picture quality has increase viewer enjoyment and the thin monitors have made them easier to situate in a room. As prices fall, more and more consumers will take advantage of what the new plasma television sets have to offer.
