How Dangerous Are Upper Addominal Pains?
When most individuals talk about sharp stomach pains, they may essentially be describing the pain that did is not coming from the actual organ known as the stomach. Terms like stomachache, stomach pains and stomach discomfort may describe any pain that we feel in the area between the bottom of the sternum and groin.
In this article, we’ll, focus only on problems that cause pain in the upper abdominal area – more or less surrounding the navel. We’ll refrain from discussing problems like appendicitis or groin pains that you feel mainly in the lower regions of the abdomen.
With that in mind, here are the most typical causes of sharp pains in the stomach.
Over indulging – The simple act of eating too much or eating too fast can result in stomach upset.

Gastritis – Gastritis is characterized by inflammation or erosion in an area of the stomach lining. Peptic ulcers are a kind of gastritis, which can actually cause severe, extremely sharp pain in the stomach.
Acid regurgitation or reflux – We all are familiar with a condition called heartburn. This condition, known to doctors as acid reflux, occurs when stomach acid erupts past the valve between the stomach and the esophagus. Tissues in the esophagus are significantly more sensitive than those in the stomach, so part of the esophagus becomes damaged from an acid burn. This results in tingling or burning discomfort in the upper abdominal area.
Cancer – As you may already be aware many types of cancer cause no pain before they reach an advanced phase. But at some point, sharp pain begins to occur. The same is true with stomach cancer. Stomach cancer doesn’t occur much in the U.S., but all have it are likely to experience sharp abdominal pains.
Gallbladder trouble – When you feel sharp abdominal pain shortly after you have a rich, high cholesterol meal, you may be experiencing a gallbladder attack. Gallbladder attacks often take place when too much cholesterol arrives in the gallbladder all at once, and the gallbladder is unable to process it all as it normally does. Gallbladder problems not only cause abdominal pain, but can also cause discomfort in the side and back between the shoulders.
Gallstones, which are also a form of gallbladder problems, can cause severe abdominal pain as well.
Liver conditions – There are many different forms of liver conditions that cause abdominal pain. Liver conditions may include cirrhosis and hepatitis, which are forms of liver inflammation. Stomach pain is a common warning sign of another liver-related condition called ascites. Ascites occurs when fluid accumulates in the abdominal area.
Pancreatitis – Pancreatitis is caused by inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas helps regulate the way the human body processes sugar.
Spleen – A disorder known as splenomegaly is a medical term for an enlarged spleen. When you are diagnosed with splenomegaly, it is typically a sign of some other underlying problem. Infection, anemia, or cancer are among the possibilities. A ruptured spleen, which is usually caused by a serious blow or traumatic injury of any type, will result in abdominal pain.
The list above are just some of the possible causes of sharp abdominal pain. A lot of the time, such pain will disappear after some time without treatment. However, extremely intense abdominal pain, or moderate abdominal pain persisting for more than several hours is worth a call to your general practitioner.
